A Wonderful Surprise

This past Sunday, October 26th, was very busy! Gerald preached at the Farm Park at 9:00 that morning. We arrived about twenty till and waited to see how many would come. My dad was already there; he found out the day before that Gerald would be there preaching. By a little after 9:00 that small country church was almost full. The girls sang some specials then Gerald brought a great message on the Crown of Thorns and Perilous Times. It was a very thought provoking and prayer provoking message. Gerald’s parents and brother’s family were in attendance as well as one of Gerald’s former classmates and his family.
We made it to our church just a little after 11:00 for worship service. And what a service it was! It was like a continuation of Gerald’s. The spirit was so sweet in the church while the specials were being sung by a dear family in our church and continued through the preaching service. At one point our pastor took the American flag and held it out in front of the congregation while several of our veterans testified, hugged our pastor and/or came to the altar to pray. Many others testified and came to the altar to thank God for His blessings and pray for America. We all stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance before our pastor preached. What a service!
After services we ate lunch in the fellowship hall with our pastor’s family and two other families from our church. I just assumed the lunch invitation had to do with this being Preacher Appreciation Month. For dessert a cake was brought out with candles lit and everybody sang “Happy Birthday” to me. What a surprise! Soon my older girls and the other ladies were cleaning up after the meal. Me, Gerald and the pastor kept talking while we finished up our dessert. Soon I noticed Shanna and her dad grinning and making hand signals to each other. Shanna finally said, “Mom, this is for you,” and motioned behind me. She and the ladies had been setting up a snack table and a gift table. I looked at them a little confused…after all we had just eaten. Then Shanna said, “Mom, this meal was to get you here for your surprise Baby Shower from the ladies of the church!” Well finally the light went on and I understood…talk about being slow. I didn’t have a clue the day was planned for me. Soon the other ladies started arriving and all the little children and I enjoyed opening all the sweet little baby gifts.
Since there was youth choir practice the four older girls stayed after the shower while Gerald and I took Faith, Gerald Jr. and all the gifts home. They both fell asleep on the way. We had just enough time to bring in the gifts and all the leftover food they gave us, pick Mrs. Briles up and head back to church for the evening service. The girls sang two specials that night also.
Since this was the last Sunday of the month we had snacks that night in the fellowship hall to honor all those with October birthdays.
I almost forgot to mention that Shanna had made muffins for my birthday breakfast. And she and Gera worked quickly to get everyone ready early so they could shower me with birthday gifts before leaving at 8:30 for church that morning. So we were very busy all day. It was a great Lord’s Day and a wonderful Birthday.
Love,
~Vicky~
